How do I report that I sold my car in California?

Ava's answer
When you sell or give away a vehicle in California, tell DMV within 5 calendar days by filing a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL). It does not transfer ownership; the buyer still has to do that.
- File within 5 days: The law requires notice within 5 calendar days of the sale or transfer.
- File online or by mail: File online, or mail form REG 138 to the address on the form. Online filings update the record within 1 business day.
- Keep your confirmation: Save or print the confirmation for your records.
- The buyer finishes the transfer: Only the buyer's transfer application, using the title you signed, removes your name from the record.
