Ava's answer
To change your name on a California license or ID, update Social Security first, then apply and finish at a DMV office. You'll get a new card by mail in about three to four weeks.
- Update Social Security first: DMV checks your name with SSA. If it doesn't match, your application is denied.
- Fill out a new application: You can choose REAL ID in the application.
- Gather your name proof: Non-REAL ID needs proof of your true full name. REAL ID also needs your SSN and two residency proofs.
- Visit a DMV office: Bring your current card and documents. A license gets a 60-day temporary; the new card arrives in 3–4 weeks.
